James Dillon’s La navette received its UK premiere on 19 August by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins. Composed in 2001, La navette deals with a subject that has occupied Dillon in several of his works in recent years; the myth of Philomela. La navette is a magically scored and thrilling orchestral showpiece. Prom 45 details
Cornelius Cardew’s Bun No. 1 for Orchestra received its London premiere some 45 years after it was composed, at a Prom on 20 August. The work was a product of a period of study Cardew undertook with Goffredo Petrassi in Rome and until this year has not been heard since its first performance in 1965. Prom 47 details
Brian Ferneyhough’s Dum Transisset I-IV for String Quartet was performed as part of the Proms Saturday Matinee Series on 4 September at Cadogan Hall by the Arditti String Quartet. Prom PSM5 details
