'Ricochets Between': Julian Philips World Premiere:
For Britten Sinfonia 14/12/2010
Julian Philips has been commissioned by Britten Sinfonia to write a new work for its 'At Lunch' series in December. 'Richochets Between' will receive its world premiere on 14 December at Cambridge's West Road Concert Hall, followed by performances in London and Norwich. Philips has programmed the concert, in which the Janacek Concertino and Brahms's Clarinet Trio feature to frame and complement his new work.
This eleven minute ensemble piece ricochets between four kinds of musical material: a Driving Riff that pits one violin against another, a Saccharine Ballad in which an imaginary folk-tune is elaborated over a ground, a Hollywoodish Fanfare in which the solo clarinet takes centre stage and an Atonal Landscape where slowly unfolding piano harmonies resonate across the ensemble.
Ricochets Between is a co-comission by Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall with generous support from John Stephens OBE and the RVW Trust.
