On Monday 20 June 2011 the Gabrieli Consort will perform Jonathan Dove’s latest choral work - Two Sonnets at Spitalfields Music’s Summer Festival. Commissioned by Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort & Players, Two Sonnets are secular counterparts to the morning and evening offices (or prayers) and are set to sonnets by Samuel Daniel and William Shakespeare. The work offers rich harmonies, stunning vocal lines and the masterful word setting that Dove is so well known for. The programme also includes William Byrd’s monumental Great Service, acknowledged as the crowning point of unaccompanied church music during the 16th century, and works from other contemporary British composers.
