World Premiere of new arrangement for String Quartet
As part of the Musica Viva series, a new arrangement of Cage’s cycle 44 Harmonies from Apartment House 1776 received its first complete performance at St Ursula’s Church in Munich on 17 December 2011. Cage’s work was arranged for string quartet by Irvine Arditti and performed by the Arditti Quartet.
Cage based his 44 Harmonies on 18th-century American sacred songs, which he transformed into band arrangements that were integrated into his composition Apartment House 1776, written to mark the bicentenary of American independence in 1976.
