January saw world premieres of two new choral works by Judith Bingham in the USA. Eden was commissioned by the Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota and given its first performance there on 22 January. A setting of words by the colonial American poet, Edward Taylor, the work is scored for soprano solo, SATB chorus, and organ. The performance was followed by a recital of British vocal music featuring five of the composers songs for solo voice. Ave virgo sanctissima was commissioned and premiered by the choir of St Thomas the Apostle, Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles. Setting Latin texts by Prudentius and St Ambrose, the work is scored for a cappella SATB chorus.
