Major premieres in Los Angeles, London and Helsingborg
Benjamin Wallfisch looks forward to several important premieres and performances in the coming weeks.
New Violin Concerto Premiered in Los Angeles
A new Violin Concerto has been commissioned by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and will be premiered by them in LA on 10 and 11 November 2012. Wallfisch describes the new work as an exploration of the extremes of lyricism and virtuosity of which the instrument is capable.
“The introduction presents the key DNA of the rest of the piece; the lines heard in the solo violin form the basis of almost all the material that follows. The first movement takes us through a prism of sound, with a complex pianissimo solo fleeting through aharmonic tapestry that is ever shifting. In the second movement I wanted to bring to the fore the most expressive capabilities of the violin with an emphasis on falling lines that serve to contrast what is to come. After a cadenza our soloist launches us into the Finale, in which I interpret the Rondo form in the context of the Zingarese style. In the piece’s conclusion we hear the questions raised earlier in the piece answered con fuoco.”
Two of Wallfisch's orchestra works will receive their Swedish premieres in Sweden on 21 October 2012, when the Helsingborgs Symfoniorkester performs and Escape Velocity in a concert which is conducted by the composer. Anillo was premiered by the Philharmonia Orchestra in 2009, Escape Velocity was written for the BBC Proms 2006.
