Following the success of his stage work Wasser, the German premiere of Arnuff Herrmann’s durchbrochene Arbeit takes place on 19 October at the Donaueschinger Musiktage. The World Premiere was back in August – in Stockholm, with the Nya Chamber Orchestra under Susanna Mälkki. The programme of the work, which boasts an individual and distinctive orchestral sound-world, draws on the central theme of ‘advancement’ or ‘breakthrough’. The work was a joint-commission from SWR and Swedish Radio.
On the programme of the closing concert of the festival (21 October) is Berhard Gander’s hukl – a work that raises a series of questions. Its title suggests a derivation from the American comic-strip character, the ‘incredible hulk’; is the work a postmodern, deconstructive take – perhaps also ironic and provocative – on this theme? Likewise, are we to expect from this new orchestral work, an equally expansive, supercharged instrumental canvas?
