Matthew Taylor Premieres

New concertos for violin and viola

Violinist Efi Christodoulou is soloist in Matthew Taylor’s new Violin Concerto, the world premiere of which takes place on 2 March at Capella Hall, St Petersburg, Russia, with the St Petersburg Capella Orchestra conducted by the composer. The work responds to the Romantic tradition but also embraces the world of jazz and, in the last movement, comic opera. Earlier in the year on 18 January, Taylor’s work formerly known as 5 Humoreskes and now restyled – given the scale of the work – as a Viola Concerto of equal substance to the Violin Concerto, will be heard in a programme of new work by British composers. This will be given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Garry Walker, with Sarah Jane Bradley as viola soloist.
