Panufnik – ‘Dictionary Definition’ Of The Orchestra

Premiere 18 April 2013

Roxanna Panufnik’s Orchestrapaedia is a piece that mirrors Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, but for chamber rather than the forces of Britten’s larger instrumental essay. The theme of Panufnik’s exploration of orchestral timbres and colours is a Welsh folk song, 'Dros yr Afon' – which undergoes a sequence of its dozen-or-so transformations as the theme progresses, passing through the different regions of the orchestra.

Lasting just under 20 minutes, the premiere of this new ‘young person’s guide’ is given on 18 April by the Welsh Sinfonia, under Mark Eager, in the Dora Stoutzker Hall at the Royal Welsh Academy of Music and Drama, Cardiff.
