With a series of celebrated, high-profile commissions and recordings to his name, Daníel Bjarnason is a composer on the rise. Over the next few months, which will see both the release of his latest CD, Over Light Earth, and the world premiere of a new piece for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he is now being recognized as a major composer on the international stage, and the Edition Peters Group is proud to welcome him to our roster of composers.
The craft and emotional power of Bjarnason's music has won him acclaim from critics around the globe. Last fall, the Los Angeles Times said his piece Over Light Earth bristled with energy, and earlier this year the Guardian praised Bjarnason's tautly ethereal, satisfyingly unsettling Sólaris, written with Australian electronic composer Ben Frost, as well as the mesmerising and beautifully sustained percussion quartet commissioned for Nico Muhly's A Scream and an Outrage festival at the Barbican.
Daníel Bjarnason's music has already broken through to the popular consciousness via his collaborations with the stars of Reykjavík's distinctly 21st-century musical scene, including not only Frost and Muhly but also the rock band Sigur Rós, whose latest album features arrangements by Bjarnason.
But like Edition Peters itself, a publishing firm with a tradition that extends from Beethoven, to Richard Strauss, to John Cage, to the present-day avant garde, Daníel Bjarnason's body of work reaches down from unmistakably contemporary and groundbreaking techniques into roots in the heroic 19th-century tradition.
As our publishing relationship moves forward, Peters is pleased to be able to make his works available to performers and audiences worldwide.
