World Premiere For Judith Bingham At Southwark Cathedral
World Premiere of Les Saintes Maries de la Mer on 28 June 2014
On 28 June 2014 the Girls’ Choirs of Southwark, Guildford and St Alban’s Cathedrals come together to give the world premiere of Judith Bingham’s Les Saintes Maries de la Mer at Southwark Cathedral. With words by Elizabeth Cook, Bingham’s piece tells the legend from the Camargue about how two of the ‘Three Marys’ present at the Crucifixion and at the Tomb of Jesus were put in a boat and washed up on the shore of southern France where they began to preach the Gospel. Their servant, an Egyptian woman named Sarah, was adopted by the Romany gypsies as their patron Saint Sara, and her arrival at Les Saintes Maries de la Mer in the Camargue is reenacted every year.
The work was commissioned by the City of London Festival which runs from 22 June to 17 July 2014. To book tickets, please visit the City of London Festival website.
