After premieres at the BBC Proms, Jonathan Dove’s Gaia Theory and Roxanna Panufnik’s Three Paths to Peace are now available on the BBC iPlayer. Reflecting Dove’s concern with environmental issues, Gaia Theory is a response to James Lovelock’s hypothesis that the earth is self-regulating, with interrelated processes locked in a kind of dance. This performance was the work’s world premiere. Panufnik’s Thee Paths to Peace (receiving its European premiere) emphasises the shared ground between Christianity, Judaism and Islam, taking the story of Abraham and Isaac (Genesis 22) – common to all three religions – as its starting point. Despite receiving its world premiere back in 2008, this work is particularly relevant at present, when religious minorities are suffering terrible persecution in the Middle East.
