Brian Ferneyhough’s new work for ensemble Inconjunctions receives its World Premiere at the Donaueschingen Festival on 19 October 2014. The work has been commissioned by the Southwest German Radio (SWR) and will be performed by the Ensemble Modern conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer.
In astrology, ‘inconjunct’ planets are situated as to have no influence on one another. The five sections of Ferneyhough’s work exhibit, “wildly contrasting individual characters” which also put Ferneyhough in mind of the Quincunx, the arrangement of five elements in a pre-defined space, often in the form of an ‘X’ (as in the basilica of Saint Mark in Venice).
