Sidney Corbett’s new opera, Die Andere, with libretto by Christoph Hein, premieres at Theater Magdeburg in Germany on 18 March 2016. The opera is based on the biblical story of Abraham of whom it was prophesised would be the father of a people, but his position is threatened when his wife Sara fails to give birth to a son. Instead, it is suggested that he should father a child with Sara’s maid, Hagar, instead. Hagar becomes pregnant and Abraham’s claims to power seem assured, but the seeds of conflict have been planted.
After their first successful collaboration with Noah in 2001, premiered in Bremen, the American composer Sidney Corbett and the German writer and dramatist Christoph Hein have again turned to a biblical theme. Corbett and Hein undress the story and it leads them to the fundamental questions of human life: How ruthless we are fighting for our power? And how do we live with the outcome?
