Piers Hellawell's new work continues to Cheltenham
Piers Hellawell’s new chamber work for piano trio and narrator will be performed at Cheltenham Festival’s Pittville Pump Room on 15 July 2016. Performed by the Fidelio Trio and poet Sinéad Morrissey, Up By the Roots has already toured across the UK and Ireland and will feature again at Aberdeen's SOUND Festival on 21 October.
While the collision of music and words traditionally takes a vocal form, the collaboration of poet Sinéad Morrissey and composer Piers Hellawell - part of PRS for Music Foundation’s ‘Beyond Borders’ scheme - respects, though later undermining, the discrete territories of poetry and music. Music from the piano trio is interleaved with a sequence of poems and such is the volatile chemistry of music and poetry that this seemly alternation eventually takes a more subversive turn as it progresses. As music seeps into poem and poetry becomes sound, the mix drifts nearer to an operatic scena… By the end, music and poetry are inextricably entangled.
Referring to the Irish premiere on 12 June, Dublin's Sunday Business Post said that Up By the Roots “bristled with an imaginative scenario that fused music, poetry and a whiff of operatic indulgence into a most unusual creation.”
