Donaueschinger Musiktage opens on Friday 14 October 2016 with the premiere of a new work from James Dillon entitled The Gates. Written for string quartet with orchestra and performed by the Arditti Quartet and SWR Symphonieorchester conducted by Pierre-André Valade, the title refers to the marking of a boundary and the point where one territory stops and another begins. Dillon says that ‘Any musical work exists on the edge between the heard and the unheard, between the measures, between the worldly and the spiritual, that axis, that pole or centre, which contains its own periphery.’
Rebecca Saunders’ Skin, for soprano and ensemble, receives its first performance at the festival the following evening from Juliet Fraser and Klangforum Wien. The piece will be performed in the UK in November as part of Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
