City Stanzas In St Paul

Beamish's third piano concerto premieres in Minnesota

Sally Beamish’s third piano concerto, City Stanzas, premieres on 20 January 2017 with soloist Jonathan Biss and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra conducted by Mischa Santora at the Ordway Concert Hall in Minnesota.

In April, Biss takes the work to Scotland, with the RSNO performing the UK premiere.

The piece completes a set of concertos which began with 2016’s Hill Stanzas, written for soloist Ronald Brautigam, and continued with the December premiere of Cauldron of the Speckled Seas for Martin Roscoe and the BBCSSO. While Beamish’s first two piano concertos refer to the natural world – the first, Hill Stanzas, to the Cairngorm mountains, and the second, Cauldron of the Speckled Seas, to a whirlpool off the West coast of Scotland, in this third concerto, it is the urban landscape that acts.
