Works by Sally Beamish and Rebecca Saunders have been shortlisted for the 2017 BASCA British Composer Awards, with winners announced on 6 December.
Sally Beamish has two nominations, firstly for her ballet The Tempest, choreographed by David Bintley. Conjuring Prospero’s magical isle from Shakespeare’s late masterpiece, the piece was first performed by Birmingham Royal Ballet and features in the Stage Works category. Secondly, Merula Perpetua, a for viola and piano, is shortlisted in the Solo/Duo category. The duo premiered at the at Cadogan Hall for the BBC Proms with Lise Berthaud (viola) and David Saudubray and was written in memory of Peter Maxwell Davies.
Skin, by Rebecca Saunders, received its UK premiere at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival with soprano Juliet Fraser and Klangforum Wien, conducted by Bas Wiegers, and is nominated in the Chamber Ensemble category. London Sinfonietta will perform the London premiere in May at the
Queen Elizabeth Hall.
