6 December sees the world premiere of Erkki-Sven Tüür’s new piccolo concerto, Solastalgia, with soloist Vincent Cortvrint and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Stéphane Denève, in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. A second performance follows on 7 December, with further premieres taking place next year with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the St Louis Symphony.
The piece expands on the thematic ideas of Tüür’s 2015 work Sow the Wind… with the word solastalgia describing a form of psychic or existential distress caused by environmental change such as climate change.
Sebastian Fagerlund’s Octet Autumn Equinox will also be performed on 6 December elsewhere in the Concertgebouw in the Recital Hall. Premiered at this years Delft Chamber Music Festival, Autumn Equinox was written to be programmed with, and match the forces of, Schubert's Octet, and the pieces are paired up
once again for this concert.
