Daníel Bjarnason’s Violin Concerto receives it’s New York premiere on 8 June 2018 with Pekka Kuusisto and the New York Philharmonic conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen at David Geffen Hall.
Following its premiere at the Hollywood Bowl with the LA Phil, Kuusisto has since toured the concerto around Europe with London’s Philharmonia. Each concert brings something new as Bjarnason gives the soloist opportunities to improvise cadenzas which has even led to Kuusisto whistling whist strumming chords on the violin.
In a week that also saw him nominated in the Nordic Council Music Awards, Bjarnason’s opera Brothers (based on the film by Susanne Bier) receives its Icelandic premiere with the Icelandic Opera on 9 June, conducted by the composer. Directed by Kasper Holten, with stage design by Steffen Aarfing and a libretto by Kerstin Perski, Brothers tells the story of two brothers and a love triangle affected by war.
