Piers Hellawell returns to Great Lakes Festival

Premieres of Bone Fragments and A Frieze and a Litany

Piers Hellawell returns to Detroit’s Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, which featured him in 2016 as Stone Composer in Residence, for two premieres in June 2018.
Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s trombone Kenneth Thompkins premieres Bone Fragments, while festival director and Emerson Quartet cellist Paul Watkins gives the US premiere of A Frieze and a Litany, written for Robert Irvine in 2015. The set of three trombone pieces was written for Thompkins as part of the Festival’s ‘Birthday Candles’ series, which commissioned short works from leading composers to celebrate the festival’s 25 years; other featured composers include Brett Dean, William Bolcom, John Harbison and Joan Tower.
